Skandia Cowes Week

None

2nd-9th August 2008

It is the oldest and largest annual sailing regatta in the World and it is held in Cowes over eight days at the beginning of August. This unique British sporting event, where men and women compete equally and where amateur sailors race against Olympic and World Champions, combines competitive racing with tremendous fun for the 8,500 competitors racing each day plus around 80,000 spectators who enjoy a fantastic line up of shoreside entertainment day and night.

Introduced two years ago to acknowledge and celebrate women’s achievements in sailing, the Champagne G.H. Mumm Ladies Day takes place on Thursday, 7 August. Expect lots of fun and champagne tasting sessions as well as visits from some well-known sporting and TV personalities to add to the occasion. Media may request an invitation to the G.H. Mumm Ladies Day Awards Reception via the Press Office.

There’s also a terrific scheme for novices run by title sponsor Skandia (2008 is their last year) in association with the UKSA, called “Try Sailing”. Sign-up at the Try Sailing booth on Cowes Parade for an hour on the water learning to sail with a professional skipper. Best of all, there are around 800 places available during the regatta and it’s FREE.
